This is the old-fashioned Minkowski space-time convention. It's better to use
real coordinates in a metric with signature {-1, -1, -1, 1}: this not only
simplifies
general relativity calculations, but is also somehow more intuitive (after
all, physical measurements always refer to real quantities).
